Day Ten :: Thread! "21 Days To Your ULTIMATE Sewing Space"

Day 10-Thread!

This is another area of our sewing space that could use some serious attention. We have a lot of thread! And really need to keep it all sorted by type, weight, fiber, and color. Solutions?

Clean, Purge, Organize :: Day 10

We are collectors of thread--probably even more so than fabric! Resulting in many boxes, bins, and cube organizers filled with thread. We really want and need our thread to help inspire our creations--color is primary to designing. We like ours displayed front and center. It helps give a nice dose of color to the studio, and is in easy reach.

Before Example #1! Serger cones tossed in a bin until time to sew/serge again. This is definitely better than in a stacked pile alongside the serger (yes we do that when we get slammed). No more.
This serger cone rack was made by Allyce's Grandfather--master woodworker extraordinaire! You can also purchase pre-made wood serger cone racks and attach them to rails for a similar set-up (we have 2 more just like that he created for our studio). And since we have several rolling shelf units, we can hook them on the sides for easy reach. This set-up can store a ton of serger thread.
We tend to be in a rush (who isn't pressed for time while sewing?!) and sometimes toss threads in a clear shoebox to try to contain the clutter. While it isn't the worst solution, (it IS clear so you can see through) it's not quite ideal. Here's a much better solution!
These storage boxes that swing open to view your thread is SO inspiring, as well as organized. This is one of our Sulky Rayon collections, all neat and easy to match up colors as needed for when we get the urge to do machine embroidery. Much better than thrown in a bin.
It IS time-consuming to dig out of the thread avalanche. But with pretty displays like the above, it is motivating to get it all sorted out. And makes sewing, serging, quilting, and embroidery a fast set-up (Cindy's main goal for this challenge).

Watch for Day Eleven of "21 Days to Your ULTIMATE Sewing Space" to arrive soon.

I have my sewing thread in drawers and bobbins are with them. My embroidery thread is in other drawers. Serger threads are in plastic boxes made for them. Other types of threads are stored in plastic thread boxes.
