Day Eleven :: Fabric Scraps! "21 Days To Your ULTIMATE Sewing Space"
Day 11-Fabric Scraps!
The never ending pile of leftovers--after cutting out a project. What to do with all the fabric scraps (besides literally scrap them right into the trash!)? Here are a few items we use for the smaller pieces we salvage for use in another project. What are yours?
Clean, Purge, Organize :: Day 11
1) Clear Shoeboxes
It's easy to buy these clear inexpensive shoe bins by the carton, for various uses (besides shoes)! At the studio we have a set grouping of fabrics used for projects like swim and activewear. So it makes sense for us to hold onto all the usable pieces after cutting a project, since the dye lot colors (mostly) match each time we order.
Placing a small label on the end of each box helps to remind us what is inside. And the clear bin allows us to organize our wall of these by color and fabric type. Yes, we have so many scrap (definition--smaller than a yard or cut pieces) boxes that we have a wall of "scraps" lol!
2) Multiple sizes of Zip top Bags
There are so many different sizes of zip top bags that you can grab quick at the store. We stock up, so we always have gallon, quart, sandwich, and snack (love the square snack size!) on hand. And lately we have been adding many other sizes too from the craft store. Then when we have smaller pieces we do not want floating around in the designated bin, we toss the scraps into an appropriate sized clear zip bag. And it keeps the pieces free of other dirt and fabric "dust" especially important on light colored fabrics.
3) 12" x 12" Scrapbook Snap Boxes
The square size of these snap lock boxes is just right for larger pieces of fabric. There are times we purchase more than one or two yards of a fabric (like black or linings) and want to store the yardage along with any matching scraps. Besides the usual clear, they come in a few colors that are still see-through, so we color code things like fabric types and linings. These boxes stack nicely too, and work not only for storing fabrics, but are great for containing works in progress.
Where is DIYStyle?! This week finds us at the International Vacuum and Sewing Dealers Trade Convention and Show. So when we get back we will add pics from our studio to this post. And bonus, since we will be surrounded by all the NEW cool sewing goodies, we will post some of our finds in another post to come!
Watch for Day Twelve of "21 Days to Your ULTIMATE Sewing Space" to arrive soon.
